The Office of Campus Counsel provides counsel and legal advice to the chancellor and his cabinet as well as to the senior leadership at University of California Santa Barbara. Chief Campus Counsel Nancy Hamill provides legal advice and assistance on a wide range of matters affecting faculty, students and staff. Such matters include labor and employment, student affairs, faculty issues, research, academic affairs, land use, dispute resolution, compliance and regulations and policies of The Regents. The Chief Campus Counsel reports to Chancellor Henry T. Yang, as part of the Office of the Chancellor and to the systemwide General Counsel, and Vice President for Legal Affairs for the Regents of the University of California, Charles F. Robinson.

Summary of Job Duties
(Note: This summary will be used for keyword search) Reporting to the Chief Campus Counsel, this position provides legal support on a wide variety of matters, including subpoenas, Public Records Act, and Information Practice Act Responses for the UC Santa Barbara campus. This position will provide legal support for the Chief Campus Counsel and other senior administrators by performing a variety of legal tasks, reviewing legal documents, and drafting written correspondence pertaining to University legal matters.
Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced legal professional to resolve a diverse range of research and other legal related assignments, applying theory and putting it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. Receives general instructions from the supervising attorney and exercises judgment in selecting methods and techniques for legal research. Works on moderate to complex legal research projects of diverse scope.

Minimum Requirements

* Minimum of five years of demonstrated experience as a legal professional, with an Associate or Bachelor's degree, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience/training.

* In-depth knowledge in one or more legal practice areas.

* Demonstrated record of professionalism, discretion, confidentiality, integrity and ethics.

* Proficient in Microsoft applications and other common business software applications.

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff; both verbally and in writing.

* Strong project management and data organization skills.

* Strong analytical / problem-solving skills, skill in researching, analyzing, and synthesizing large amounts of data and/or information.

* Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
* Practices the Values for Principles of Community: collaborative, supportive, respectful of differences, and committed to fairness and diversity in all interactions, both within and outside the team. Supports diversity efforts and complies with University efforts such as diversity awareness training.

Desirable Requirements

* Paralegal certificate in good standing issued by a national paralegal association.

* Prior experience working in the field of law in the higher education environment.
* Working knowledge of University of California policies, protocols and procedures.
