This recruitment will be open until filled.
We are accepting applications to fill one vacancy in the County of
Santa Barbara. The current vacancy is in the Sheriff's Office. The
employment list for this recruitment may also be used to fill
future vacancies in the Sheriff's Office, the General Services
Department, Vehicle Operations Division, and in the Social Services
Department.

POSITION: Under general supervision, the selected candidate
maintains the department's storeroom, including stocking of
operational materials and supplies, inventory control and
recordkeeping, and purchasing; moves office furniture and
equipment; and performs related duties as required. For the
position in the Sheriff's Office, the selected candidate will work
in multiple areas of law enforcement operations, including locked
custody jail facilities.

Examples of Duties
* Plans and performs work that involves ordering, receiving,
inspecting, returning, unloading, shelving, packing, labeling,
pricing, delivering, and maintaining a perpetual inventory of
forms, office supplies, and various types of equipment.
* Rotates stock and arranges for disposal of surplus.
* Keeps records to maintain inventory control, cost containment,
and to assure proper stock levels.
* Coordinates freight handling, equipment and furniture moving, and
minor repairs.
* Oversees mail handling and courier service.
* To accomplish job duties, uses a computer and operate automotive
equipment; may operate a forklift, or other light equipment.
May select, train, and supervise subordinates, when applicable.
Employment Standards
* Two years of experience in storekeeping, inventory control, and
recordkeeping; OR,
* One year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class
of Utility Clerk, Departmental with Santa Barbara County; OR,
* A combination of training, education, and experience that is
equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that
provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Additional Qualifications:
* Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Class C
Driver's License is required at the time of appointment and must be
kept valid throughout the term of employment.
* Must be physically able to regularly lift heavy items up to 50
pounds above and below shoulder height, climb ladders and perform
continuous standing, walking, reaching, and bending.
Knowledge of: storekeeping and inventory control procedures;
recordkeeping and other standard office procedures; care and
maintenance of equipment and supplies; safety and security
practices; basic mechanical concepts; work and time management
techniques; public contact and communication techniques.
Ability to: read, interpret, and carry out written and oral
instructions; write legibly; use a computer to prepare written
correspondence and maintain routine records, reports and forms;
estimate department needs; determine the quality and quantity of
materials received in relation to prescribed specifications;
perform accurate arithmetical calculations; work under pressure;
maintain good working relationships with supervisors, peers, and
the public; organize and prioritize work; interpret information
contained in parts and service manuals; understand and utilize
technical repair terminology and concepts; use a calculator;
operate light machinery that may include a forklift; observe safe
work and driving practices.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of: principles of supervision.
Physical Conditions: Must be physically able to lift heavy items up
to 50 pounds above and below shoulder height, climb ladders and
perform continuous standing, walking, reaching, and bending.
Supplemental Information
APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS:
* Review applications and supplemental questionnaire to determine
those candidates who meet the employment standards.
* Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking. Applications that meet the
employment standards will be evaluated and scored. Candidates'
final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by
this score. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than
11 qualified candidates.
Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the
supplemental questionnaire ranking to be placed on an employment
list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors
listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are
successful in the selection process will have their names placed on
the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the
employment list is established, all candidates will receive written
notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list,
and exact duration of the employment list.
The following process is used only for the Sheriff's Office:
* Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ). Once candidates are placed
on the employment list, the Human Resources Department will email
candidates a notice regarding completion of a Personal History
Questionnaire (PHQ).
* If candidates pass and are in the top group, they will be sent to
the hiring department for consideration. Those that are interviewed
and are still being considered for a position will advance to the
next step in the hiring process, which includes the following:
* Polygraph Examination: measures the accuracy of information
disclosed on the PHQ and during the background investigation.
* Background Investigation: includes an interview and in-depth
background investigation of arrest records, personal, military,
credit, and employment history; inquiry of persons who know you and
evaluate whether you respect the law and rights of others; are
dependable and responsible; have demonstrated mature judgment in
areas such as the use of drugs and intoxicants; are honest; and a
safe driver.
* Live Scan: Electronic fingerprint scanning that is certified by
the State Department of Justice.
Placement on Employment List & Selection Interview by Hiring
Departments: Upon placement of employment list, you will be
notified by the Human Resources Department. The hiring department
will receive at least the candidates that are ranked in the top 10.
The hiring departments may decide which of those 10 candidates they
will reach out to interview.
Conditional Job Offer: Once a conditional offer of employment has
been made, candidate will be required to successfully complete a
background check, which includes a conviction history check, and
satisfactory reference checks. Appointee may be subject to a
post-offer medical evaluation or examination. The appointee must
satisfactorily complete a probationary period of twelve (12)
months.
