Description
What do Lifeguards do?
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit,
charitable organization committed to strengthening community
through youth development, healthy living and social
responsibility. The Lifeguard at the Channel Islands YMCA creates a
safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all
individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions
in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA
policies and procedures.
- Maintain constant surveillance of water and pool deck areas by
10-10 scanning.
- Assist swimmers in distress.
- Provide emergency medical assistance as trained to any person
on the YMCA premise as
- necessary.
- Take and record chemical readings set forth by branch.
- Follow YMCA Dress Code. Always wear a lifeguard shirt. Be
identifiable.
- Must attend staff meetings and in-service trainings.
- Know emergency procedures and chain of command.
- Know and operate physically challenged access equipment.
- Cover and uncover the pool and change lane lines when
applicable.
- Complete incident reports as needed and contact supervisor
if/when an emergency occurs.
- Lifeguard must guard from elevated chair. Always carry first
aid pack and rescue tube.
- Must follow substitution procedures when finding a
replacement.
- Enforce and educate members about aquatic rules and procedures
set forth by branch.
- Help maintain emergency equipment. (Shepherds crook, buoy, ring
buoy, spine board, etc.)
- Report specific supply needs to supervisor.
- Wash deck, maintain cleanliness and keep pool deck clear of any
obstructions.
- Use time clock for clocking in. Lifeguards need to be on deck
10 minutes before their shift.
- Introduce and emulate Core Values of respect, responsibility,
honesty and caring.
- Actively build relationships and connections with and among
members by using members names and engaging members in
conversation.
- Actively listen in relationship building conversations and
while checking on members progress.
- Help facilitate community building by introducing members to
other staff and, to other members. Be aware of your regular members
and welcome them back if they have been away.
- Complete any other tasks assigned by supervisor. BENEFITS FOR

Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must possess valid lifeguard certification from the Red Cross,
Boy Scouts of America, United
- States Lifesaving Association, Starfish Aquatics, or the YMCA.
Lifeguards holding non-YMCA certifications must complete either a
cross over training to YMCA Lifeguard 2011 or the complete YMCA
Lifeguard 2011 within 90 days of employment.
- First Aid, CPR/AED Certifications or an Emergency Medical
Technician certificate of basic or higher may be substituted for
First Aid, CPR/AED.
- Must be able to complete YMCA swim test and pass entry written
test.
