Quantum Research Scientist

Company: Google Inc.
Location: Goleta
Posted on: November 15, 2021

Job Description:

Minimum qualifications: * PhD in physics, electrical engineering, quantum information, or equivalent practical experience. * Experience with open quantum systems. * Experience with device physics. Preferred qualifications: * Knowledge of quantum error correction. * Knowledge of quantum algorithms. * Knowledge of numerical physics modeling. About the job As an organization, Google maintains a portfolio of research projects driven by fundamental research, new product innovation, product contribution and infrastructure goals, while providing individuals and teams the freedom to emphasize specific types of work. As a Research Scientist, you'll setup large-scale tests and deploy promising ideas quickly and broadly, managing deadlines and deliverables while applying the latest theories to develop new and improved products, processes, or technologies. From creating experiments and prototyping implementations to designing new architectures, our research scientists work on real-world problems that span the breadth of computer science, such as machine (and deep) learning, data mining, natural language processing, hardware and software performance analysis, improving compilers for mobile platforms, as well as core search and much more. As a Research Scientist, you'll also actively contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing your findings, with ideas inspired by internal projects as well as from collaborations with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes all over the world. The Google hardware team focuses on laying the technological, scientific, and engineering foundations for making large-scale quantum computing a reality. Our architectures are based on superconducting qubits that are cooled near absolute zero. A key enabler in quantum technology is coherence. The quantum state is fragile, and easily disturbed by intrinsic or extrinsic sources of decoherence. The challenge is not only to improve it, but also work within its bounds. Your mission is to develop the tools to quantify noise, identify the underlying physics, and find ways to work around the limitations to coherence. Responsibilities * Focus on understanding the fundamental aspects of our quantum system and improving its performance. * Develop metrology tools to characterize qubits performance. * Understand the physics of the noisy qubit environment. * Mitigate the effects of decoherence on quantum operations.
