Job Description POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lifeguard at the Channel Islands YMCA creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Maintain constant surveillance of water and pool deck areas by 10-10 scanning. 2. Assist swimmers in distress. 3. Provide emergency medical assistance as trained to any person on the YMCA premise as necessary. 4. Take and record chemical readings set forth by branch. 5. Follow YMCA Dress Code. Always wear a lifeguard shirt. Be identifiable. 6. Must attend staff meetings and in-service trainings. 7. Know emergency procedures and chain of command. 8. Know and operate physically challenged access equipment. 9. Cover and uncover the pool and change lane lines when applicable. 10.Complete incident reports as needed and contact supervisor if/when an emergency occurs. 11. Lifeguard must guard from elevated chair. Always carry first aid pack and rescue tube. 12. Must follow substitution procedures when finding a replacement. 13. Enforce and educate members about aquatic rules and procedures set forth by branch. 14. Help maintain emergency equipment. (Shepherds crook, buoy, ring buoy, spine board, etc.) 15.Report specific supply needs to supervisor. 16. Wash deck, maintain cleanliness and keep pool deck clear of any obstructions. 17. Use time clock for clocking in. Lifeguards need to be on deck 10 minutes before their shift. The Y: Were for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. 18. Introduce and emulate Core Values of respect, responsibility, honesty and caring. 19.Actively build relationships and connections with and among members by using members names and engaging members in conversation. 20.Actively listen in relationship building conversations and while checking on members progress. Help facilitate community building by introducing members to other staff and, to other members. Be aware of your regular members and welcome them back if they have been away. 21.Complete any other tasks assigned by supervisor. 22.Fingerprints will be taken upon commencement of employment and results will be submitted to the Association Human Resources Department. LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES: Communication & Influence Critical Thinking & Decision Making Emotional Maturity QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be at least 18 years of age 2. Must possess valid lifeguard certification from the Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, United States Lifesaving Association, Starfish Aquatics, or the YMCA. Lifeguards holding non-YMCA certifications must complete either a cross over training to YMCA Lifeguard 2011 or the complete YMCA Lifeguard 2011 within 90 days of employment. 3. First Aid, CPR/AED Certifications or an Emergency Medical Technician certificate of basic or higher may be substituted for First Aid, CPR/AED. 4. Must be able to complete YMCA swim test and pass entry written test. 5. Must have visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act in an emergency situation. 6. Worked in Aquatic environment for more than 2 years is recommended. 7. Ability to work with members in a busy environment 8. Possess leadership qualities 9. Physically perform all skills required of a lifeguard.
Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility.
Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
