Job Description:

This is a part-time position that will provide services to an educational institution. Work hours are designed to coordinate with school term and daily class schedules. Job duties include monitoring traffic flow at local school crosswalks before and after school to ensure safe crossing of school children.This is a field environment job with exposure to inclement weather conditions. Position requires walking, standing, carrying and holding 18" x 24" Crossing Paddle. Ideal candidate must be able to work flexible hours, must be 18 years of age or older, have good moral character and strong sense of responsibility. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus. Salary: $14.09 - $17.13 per hour depending on experience Position Purpose:To ensure safe crossing of school children at local school intersections as assigned. Watch traffic flow, wait for an appropriate gap between vehicles and safely lead groups of children promptly across street, returning to street corner of origin after each crossing. This function is regulated according to Section 2100 (i) California Vehicle Code. Must be available to work split shift (Monday-Friday approximately 7:17 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.), during public school year (August through early June). Schedule will occasionally vary to accommodate early dismissal days and school holidays. Essential Functions and Basic Duties: Constantly scan intersections for traffic hazards whenever students are present.Assist students at school crosswalks before and after school and during such other times as assigned while school is in session, by creating safe gaps in the traffic stream at opportune times to safely cross and protect children.Standing in the roadway with STOP paddle continuously raised to shoulder height to show that pedestrians are using the crosswalk. Stands for approximately 1 1/2 hours at a time in the morning and approximately 1 1/2 hours in the afternoon.Control small groups of school age children while using crosswalks. Ensure that children are aware of proper safety rules when crossing streets; instruct children in basic safety techniques when crossing streets.Provide maximum pedestrian safety and prevent crossing accidents.Understand the traffic laws, signs and speed limits posted within a designated jurisdiction to effectively guide vehicles and people.Maintain a crossing area that is free of hazards, and employ the appropriate tools and equipment, including lights, flags and hand signals.Report the unsafe behavior of students to school officials to reduce the risk of someone getting hurt while crossing or waiting to cross a street.Ensure children cross street only when safe; stop vehicles by using mechanical signals and hand held stop signs; control students while waiting for traffic to clear.Report license numbers of vehicles in violation of school crosswalk-related traffic laws to supervisor; report suspicious vehicles or strangers loitering near schools. Report traffic problems or irresponsible drivers to Supervisor.Greet the general public courteously; answer questions and provide information related to crossing guard programs; assist public in crossing street or providing directions as needed.Remain visible to the public during working hours; remain calm in emergency situations.Perform other related duties as required.Daily, regular and punctual attendance. Qualifications:This position is subject to: pre-employment testing which includes an extensive background check, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing. Education/Certification: Must be 18 years of age or older. Must be reliable, have good moral character and strong sense of responsibility. Must have physical ability to perform all job duties. Must attend required training sessions. Possession of, or ability to obtain, appropriate, valid first aid and C.P.R. Certificates. Required Knowledge: Local traffic regulations. Safety factors and potentially hazardous traffic conditions. Vehicle stopping distance. Emergency assistance procedures and techniques of basic first aid and CPR. Methods and techniques of assisting children across busy streets. Skills/Abilities: Successfully complete a thorough background check. Understand and follow oral instructions and School Crossing Guard Guidelines. Perform duties in a prompt and reliable manner. Observe children approaching crosswalk. Observe and hear approaching traffic. Recognize and avoid hazardous traffic conditions. Recognize speeds and distances of approaching traffic. Respond quickly if child attempts to cross the street unsafely Remain calm in the event of an emergency. Gain respect of the school-age children so that they respond to direction. Work effectively with school district and public. Must be able to stand, sit, stoop, lift and run. Must be able to work on uneven surfaces. Must be able to work in all weather conditions including rain, fog, wind, humidity, heat and cold conditions. Some experience working with children is desirable. Learn to operate crossing guard equipment safely and effectively. Instruct children on basic safety procedures related to crossing streets. Remain alert and attentive during working hours. Remain calm and use good judgment in emergency situations. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION: A pre-employment physical examination for prospective crossing guards is required. After a candidate is hired, a medical examination will be repeated as follows:Up to age 39; every five yearsFrom 40 to 49; every two years50+; every year
