overall student life program in eight residence halls and nine
apartment complexes (10,000+ residents) with a focus on student
development and leadership programs, a residential curriculum
approach, and conduct and accountability. In addition, R&CL is
responsible for resident placement through University and Community

Assistant Resident Director (ARD) is an entry-level full-time
live-in position responsible for assisting the Resident Director
(RD) with the implementation of the student development program in
campus housing at UC Santa Barbara. Under the supervision of the
RD, the ARD utilizes a curricular approach and equity mindset as
cornerstones of their daily work in facilitating student wellness,
development, and belonging in a residential community. The contract
term is 12 months (August - July) with the opportunity for a
renewal of one additional term. The ARD may be assigned to a
community that does not have students residing in the summer, at
which time, the ARD will perform necessary duties to assist the
department with preparing for fall opening and the upcoming
academic year. Primary responsibilities include: - Assisting RD in
the implementation of a curricular approach in the development and
education of a residential community ranging from 500 to 1,800
residents. - Providing support in student staff training. -
Overseeing community development, resident engagement and
curricular initiatives. - Advising the hall/community council
consisting of student leaders. - Assisting in basic counseling,
advising, and referrals for student concerns. - Supporting student
conduct adjudication and addressing emergencies and crisis
situations. - Developing effective working relationships with
department and campus colleagues. - Completing a comprehensive,
self-directed professional development plan to further develop
skills and competencies. - Supervision of student staff. Required
Qualifications:
30% Advising & Supervising - * Advise hall/community council
meetings and activities, ensuring operations and initiatives are
inclusive and accessible for residents. * Meet with hall/community
executive leaders to set meeting agendas and address council
business needs. * Recruit and coordinate student leader elections
and onboarding. * Provide guidance on group dynamics, leadership,
and teamwork. * Distribute information about campus services and
prepare a monthly or quarterly calendar of events and resources. *
Share responsibility of supervising and evaluating 8-17 Resident
Assistants. * Wherever applicable, supervise Desk Attendants and
front desk operations or student Garden Coordinators and community
gardens.
20% Student Conduct & Crisis Response - * Assist in adjudicating
conduct cases involving residents from their community in adherence
to departmental sanctioning standards and residential curriculum
objectives. * Support students in resolving their mental health
concerns and/or connect them with campus and community resources as
needed. * Coordinate with Student Conduct, Social Workers,
Assistant Directors, and other staff as needed to provide effective
support for students of concern. * Provide mediation of roommate or
community conflicts, and when necessary, facilitate resident room
changes.
10% Departmental Support - * Participate in the recruitment and
selection for student and professional staff positions. *
Communicate and collaborate with HDAE partners (i.e. Residential
Operations, Campus Dining, etc.) to support the daily operation of
the community. * Confer with their Resident Director and co-ARD (if
applicable) to strategize around and address an array of issues
impacting the daily operation of the community. * Assist in the
management of budgets for programming, hall/community council, and
staff development. * Collaborate in the evaluation of student staff
and curricular efforts annually, highlighting successes and
providing meaningful and actionable feedback for improvement where
appropriate. * Serve as a liaison between R&CL and other campus
departments. * During the summer session, provide assistance to
projects from other functional areas such as administrative,
student conduct, and placement & assignment services
5% Community Safety - * Serves on the on-call team that provides
after-hours on-call support in campus housing year-round, including
campus breaks, holidays, and closures. * Serve as a first responder
to community and campus crises and assist campus authorities as
appropriate. * Support campus efforts during special events to
provide enhanced security measures within the community.UC
