What does a Chief Resource Development Officer do?

  • Directs, coordinates, cultivates and expands association and branch capital development, annual campaign and planned giving programs.
  • Develops strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of financial development. Serves as primary staff to assigned committees of the Board of Directors.
  • Performs market research to identify new opportunities and partner with Chief Operations Officer (COO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to establish strategies for pursuing new program, business, development opportunities.
  • Researches and meets with potential partners to investigate new program, business, and development opportunities.
  • Develops and ensures best practices for fund development are implemented across all branches.
  • Designs, consults and implements evolving, insightful, creative and effective resource development plans, for all branches, to ensure development objectives are achieved on the branch level.
  • Establishes performance measures, monitors results, evaluate the effectiveness of the organizations development program.
  • Directs effective useof donor & prospect databases.
  • Develops and implements annual plan to communicate with donors, potential donors, media, businesses and community organizations. Maintains contact in the community with business and civic leaders, interpreting the work of the Y and enlisting their interest and support.
  • Provides leadershipfor the Association Board Annual Current Support Campaign and the Association Office Staff Campaign.
  • Provides effective stewardship practices for current donors to ensure donor retention and growth.
  • Provides counsel on and assists with special events, sponsorship proposals and development of collateral materials for association and branches.
  • Develops processes and is actively involved in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major gift prospects for branches and at the Association level. Maintains database resource file on top community leaders.
  • Secures and manages portfolio of Major Donors. Supports the development of a Major Gifts portfolio for the CEO.
  • Prepares and coordinates proposals for grants from government sources and private foundations.
  • Develops systems and manages resources needed to carry out the fundraising plans.
  • Establishes and monitors the financial development department budget for the YMCA.
  • Develops fundraising policies and procedures for the association.
  • Tracks all gifts and pledges by source and purpose and provides monthly, quarterly and annual reports as needed.
  • Provides training in fund raising for staff and volunteers. Educates, motivates and provides feedback to individuals related to best practices in the fundraising process.
  • Represents the association as required by the President.
    What we look for in a Chief Resource Development Officer?
    • A Bachelors degree in a related field or equivalent; Masters degree preferred.
    • Five or more years of professional experience with a background in fundraising in the YMCA or another not-for-profit preferred.
    • Knowledge of and successful experience with annual campaigns, planned giving and capital development programs.
    • Ability to relate to top community leaders and diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the Y and the community.
    • Excellent writing and public speaking skills.
    • Intermediate to advanced computer skills and technology usage.
    • Organization skills and attention to detail.
    • Working knowledge of giving and charitable vehicles.
    • Ability to create interpretive materials to enable potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they contribute to the achievement of its mission.
    • Knowledge of the media and its use in gaining exposure for YMCA events and programs.
    • Foundation and government grant writing expertise.
    • Ability to work independently to drive projects.
    • Knowledge of market research tools and resources. Ability to secure data and information to support the growth of resources and program and line of business development.
    • CFRE or equivalent preferred; YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills required - identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner, gathers and analyzes information skillfully
    • Must be able to drive personal vehicle for business purposes and must pass DMV background check and have minimum insurance requirements
    • Travel may be required 10-15%

      EMPLOYEE BENEFITS FOR FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES:
      • RETIREMENT: The Channel Islands Association pays 8% of the candidates salary to the Y Retirement Fund, once eligibility requirements are met.
      • TIME OFF: Full time employees accrue 10-20 vacation days per year (based on years of service), 10 days sick leave per year, 7 paid holidays and 3 personal days per year.
      • HEALTH & DENTAL BENEFITS: YMCA pays for 86% of the full-time employee-only HMO medical premium. YMCA pays 50% of the full-time employee-only HMO dental premium. HMO and PPO options are available.
      • ADDITIONAL BENEFITS: Vision, life insurance, LTD and various supplemental plans are offered. Medical and dependent care reimbursement accounts available under IRS Section 125. The Y provides $25,000 basic life insurance and a core Long-term disability plan in the amount of 50% of monthly salary after 180 days of disability, at no cost to the employee. Employee-paid buy-up options are available.
      • DISCOUNTS: All staff are offered discounts on Aquatics programs, Sports programs, Youth & Adult Fitness programs, Afterschool and Schools Out Childcare, Summer Day Camp and Date Night & Misc. Youth Programs. Also provided for Full-Time Staff are discounts for Resident Camp, Preschool, and Youth & Government.
