Job Description:

- The Company: Our client is an entrepreneurial real estate investment management firm, founded in 1983, with a proven track record of investment success across a wide range of strategies, property types and geographies. -The company offers complete lifecycle investing and operations, across retail, industrial, office, apartments and self-storage. - - Currently, the company manages assets worth over $700 million, with a staff of approximately 50 seasoned professionals. Using reliable data from research and thorough investigation, the firm helps their clients make informed real estate decisions. - The Role: Reporting to the President, the Controller will manage a team of four, and will contribute to the development of the organization's strategic goals. The Controller will have primary day-to-day responsibility for interacting and coordinating with Corporate officers, in-house counsel, property supervisors, staff employees, lenders, bankers and escrow officers. -The position is based in Santa Barbara, CA. - Responsibilities: Daily: --- - - - - - -Manage all accounting operations including billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, revenue recognition, reporting for multiple operations, investment entities and corporate entities. --- - - - - - -Manage the personal accounting and reporting for the President, including cash management and lender requests. --- - - - - - -Protect assets by establishing, monitoring and enforcing internal controls. --- - - - - - -Communicate clearly financial information and results of operations. Periodically: --- - - - - - -Oversee payroll preparation. --- - - - - - -Provide status of financial condition to owners and investors by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends. --- - - - - - -Ensure compliance with loan covenants and oversee lender reporting. --- - - - - - -Ensure compliance with local, state and federal government tax reporting. --- - - - - - -Prepare entity level budgets for corporate entities and report variances. --- - - - - - -Oversee/review and process construction draws. --- - - - - - -Prepare pro-forma results of operations for current or proposed transactions. --- - - - - - -Oversee reviewed/audited financial statements. --- - - - - - -Compile and submit accounting data so that CPAs can prepare income tax returns, review completed tax returns including CPA follow-up requests and research. --- - - - - - -Facilitate year-end transfer of accounting and storage data. --- - - - - - -Responsible for approving purchase orders and disbursing vendor payments as directed by the Executive Team. --- - - - - - -Review and comment on financial aspects of transaction document drafts on request. Occasionally: --- - - - - - -Assimilate new projects into appropriate software and assign adequate finance resources. --- - - - - - -Provide return on investment analysis to ownership. --- - - - - - -Project realized and deferred gains and pro-forma tax consequences; aid with the calculation of 754 election valuations. --- - - - - - -Review/approve escrow settlement statements and prepare journal entries for property acquisitions, dispositions, and financing. --- - - - - - -Maintain accounting software and operating systems to ensure accounting systems provide necessary support to daily operations. Supervisory: --- - - - - - -Maintain financial staff by hiring, training, supervising, reviewing, disciplining, and terminating accounting personnel. - Background, Skills & Qualifications: --- - - - - - -BS in Accounting, Business or Finance is required, and a CPA is a plus. --- - - - - - -Minimum of five years of accounting and supervisory experience with multiple books. --- - - - - - -Tax preparation experience. --- - - - - - -Experience in real estate or a related industry. --- - - - - - -Experience designing and implementing internal controls for local and remote operations. --- - - - - - -Experience in multi-state operations and taxation. --- - - - - - -High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and delivering results. --- - - - - - -Proven track record of success facilitating progressive change, including systems and culture change. --- - - - - - -Advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and proficient in Microsoft Office and Ten-key. --- - - - - - -Familiarity with financial/property management software including Spectra, Yardi, Excel, SiteLink and Argus. --- - - - - - -Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills. --- - - - - - -Strong mentoring, coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of expertise. --- - - - - - -Management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers. --- - - - - - -Self-reliant; good problem solver; results oriented. --- - - - - - -Energetic, flexible, collaborative and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both strategic and tactical finance and administrative initiatives. --- - - - - - -Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills. --- - - - - - -This is a full-time salaried exempt position. A performance review is given at 90 days and on the anniversary date thereafter. Employee becomes eligible for company-provided benefits after 60 days of employment. -
